Planning Emergency and automatic Standby Power Solutions:

During the planning phase a few important decisions are made:

    • Power need is determined by selecting the circuits to be supplied. We distinguish Essential Coverage to Whole House Coverage.  And there is a solution in between called the Managed Whole House Coverage.
    • Size of the generator depends on power need of the circuits determined in step 1. The simplest method is to add all breaker specs of the circuits needed.  Read more about sizing and coverage …
    • Selecting the right generator – With the generator size in mind the generator can be selected. See the line of residential generators and commercial power generators
    • Planning of load panels for the emergency circuit and transfer switch, and options such as remote control
    • Installation material needed again depending on the coverage option, generator size and wiringGenerator Accessories

Installation of the Generator and Wiring:

  • Placement and setup of the generator
  • Installation of the load panel and the transfer switch including wiring
  • Testing and introduction of the owner and operator of the generator system

About Generator Sizing and Coverage

The most logical way to size an emergency power system is to determine which circuit needs to be powered during a power outage.  The result is the essential coverage and the most economical solution to be planned for.

To make planning easy Generac has defined prepackaged generator system with a load center and circuit breaker matching the generator size.  For example, ten circuits are supplied for the 8 kW generator. With this system, you could connect (1.) lights and TV in the family room, (2.) microwave and lights in the kitchen, (3.) refrigerator, (4.) power for the bathroom, (5.) home office and computers, (6.) garage door opener, (7.) air conditioner and (8.) the furnace.

On the other end of the spectrum is the whole house coverage which requires a generator power equal to all circuit.  To determine this size all circuits are being considered and the wattage per circuit is added to a total generator size.

Managed whole house coverage: To provide whole house coverage with a smaller generator it must be made sure that not all circuits are being used simultaneously.  Generac’s Nexus™ load-shedding switch options accomplish that by dropping non-essential circuits as the generator reaches the maximum capacity.  A good example of non-essential user would be a water heater which could wait for low-load window of the generator.
